James Omokwe

Born in the United Kingdom, James Kalu Omokwe is a visionary Nigerian filmmaker who transitioned from being a face on screen to a master behind the lens. His journey began at the University of Lagos, where he pivoted from Urban Planning to follow his passion for Creative Arts, later refining his craft at the New York Film Academy.
Omokwe first gained public recognition as an actor, notably playing Chris Okereke in the long-running soap opera Tinsel. However, driven by a desire to tell expansive, authentic African stories, he stepped behind the camera. In 2011, he directed his debut feature, Awakening, a supernatural thriller that earned critical acclaim at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).
Through his production company, Feemo Vision, Omokwe has become the architect of modern Nigerian epics. He is the creative force behind beloved Africa Magic period dramas like AjocheRiona, and Itura, which are celebrated for their high production value and cultural depth.
As of 2025, Omokwe has solidified his status as a global filmmaker. Following the success of his 130-episode telenovela Cheta’M on Showmax, he released his most ambitious project to date: the historical epic Osamede. Centered on the 1897 Benin invasion, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Market before its wide cinematic release in late 2025.
Omokwe continues to bridge the gap between traditional folklore and modern cinema, proving that African history provides the most compelling scripts for the world stage.
